Behind The Lens

Location

A simple walkway over a marshy area in North Carolina turned into a colorful photo with contrasting hues, thanks to a setting sun and swaying trees behind me.

Time

I had spent most of the afternoon exploring, looking for birds in flight, butterflies, etc., then the simplest of things caught my eye as I was walking along a trail, near the intracoastal waterway. I set up the tripod quickly before the sun began to set behind me.

Lighting

Lighting is everything. You walk from darkness, to burned out light, but somewhere between the two you find the shot. Light is fickle...be ready!

Equipment

Canon 6D, 70-300, SunPak Titanium Pro tripod.

Inspiration

I get excited when Mother Nature puts the "Obvious" right in front of you, almost as a challenge to "Catch the light if you can". How many times have you switched from handheld to mono- or tri-pod, then dig in your bag for the right lens, calibrate in-camera settings, only to look up to find the perfect light fled away laughing back at you. Be ready, set, shoot!

Editing

Yes. I used Photomatix to bring out a subtle HDR effect.

In my camera bag

Canon 6D, 24 wide, 50 prime, 70-300 zoom, and a 400 prime. All Canon. Battery pack, lighting equipment, an assortment of ND and other filters, plus "stuff".

Feedback

Wait for the light. Look for subjects other than what you intended to find. Don't be afraid of learning on the go. Read all you can. Practice in different light. And...enjoy the experience!
