Brilliant! Composition is striking! It was the one I thought was the winner for Clash of the Lites photo contest!

Visited the Falkirk Wheel several times but never when it looked as beautiful as this - a wonderful capture.

Even in the loneliest spaces we can find peace and perfection. As you have found here!

Location
This photo was taken at the Falkirk Wheel, Its the only rotating boat lift in the world!! There is a 76ft difference in height between the Union Canal and The Forth and Clyde Canal. The wheel rotates to lift boats from one canal to the other. This image was taken at the top end.Time
I had been out photographing Red Kites nearby during the day and hoped to catch the Falkirk Wheel Floodlit at night. I had parked close to the bottom of the wheel and stopped at ground level to take some images from below. As I made my way up the hill to catch this image, the floodlights were turned off!! I had to adapt to a very long exposure to light the image. The warning lights at the end are overexposed but I think the bright spots of red add a bit of varietyLighting
I had hoped for the floodlights to be on but that wasn't to be. A long exposure and the glow from the nearby town reflecting on the low cloud has lit the fairly evenly. The red warning lights at the far end draw the eye slightly to the middle.Equipment
This was taken on a canon 400D with a 10-22mm wide angle zoom. I used a tripod as the exposure had to be quite long as it was taken at night.Inspiration
I had hoped to get this image in twilight with the coloured floodlights still on the arcs but I like the overall mood of the long exposure and the glow from Falkirks streetlights .Editing
I have added a vignette to keep with the shape of the structure and I have toned down the overexposed lights at the end of the wheel. In my camera bag
I have changed my camera body now to a Canon 700D. one of these days I'll upgrade again to a Full frame body. I usually carry a 17-55mm canon kit lens and a Sigma 70-300. I have just started trying to use my 50mm prime more. I always have a few Grad filters and a B&W 10 stop.Feedback
My advice for this location would be to get there before the lights go out but I like the way this image turned out.
