When doing indoor shoots with young children, I generally try using a black background first and then shoot close ups using backlight mode. With young children moving so fast, the bright flash holds their attention for that short period of time and it tends to make them open their eyes very wide. I love capturig emotion in a childs eyes and this is a great tip to try. Hope it works for you. :)
