Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in Accomack County, Virginia, United States.

Time

It was taken shortly after sunrise. I had been on the beach taking shots of the sun rising over the Atlantic and driving back through the refuge I saw this view with the sun through the trees. A number of other photographers had arrived by this point too but were all more interested in the famous wild ponies that roam the island - I'm glad I was looking the other way!

Lighting

The light that morning was great, but was starting to get a little harsh by the time I took this photo. I deliberately composed the shot to put the sun behind the tree, helping with the exposure of the shot and also to get the starring effect you see.

Equipment

Canon 60D, Canon EF 24-105 f/4L, a cheap tripod and Cokin grad ND filters.

Inspiration

The fantastic light, the smooth water, the fact that I'd made it out of bed for a sunrise shoot!! I hadn't gone out with the intention of taking this particular shot, in fact it was my first visit to the area so this was completely unplanned. I guess I got lucky with this one!

Editing

3 shots, bracketed, into the HDR software, and then finished in Lightroom with a few exposure tweaks, clarity, vibrance and sharpening.

In my camera bag

Nowadays, I've got a Canon 6D in there with the 24-105, 70-300 and 50mm 1.8. You'll also find: - A selection of ND filters (I'm a bit of a long exposure junkie) - Cleaning cloths and dust blower (dust is my worst enemy!) - Giottos Tripod (a must for landscapes and long exposures) - Shutter release cable (see above) The usual really!

Feedback

Get up in the dark!! Sunrise shoots are amazing! Unless you are going to a high profile location you are likely to be the only person there. The light at sunrise is fantastic so get out and take full advantage of it!
