I took this photo in my backyard in South Carolina, shooting towards the sky so that I didn't catch the tree line.Time
This one was taken at about noon, it was cloudy (as you can see) so the sun wasn't too intense.Lighting
Obviously it is natural lighting but I went back with editing software to darken the features on her face and hair.Equipment
At the time I had a Sony Nex f3 with the standard lens and that is all. Pretty basic stuff, but I appreciate the results.Inspiration
The subject of the photo is my sister, and at the time we were going through a really tough school transition. She was really strong through it all and was kind of my rock during that time. And to this day she continues to be strong. In school there is a lot of pressure to conform to things that are "cool" or "fun" but she has been true to her faith and herself as a person.Editing
YES! Like I said before I went back and darkened her face and hair. I made the photo a little darker over all just to bring out the emotions she and I were feeling at the time.In my camera bag
My Cannon Rebel T3i, 50mm lens, tripod, shutter release remote (for the occasional selfie) and flour.... You never know when you might need to add some drama to a photo with some flour!Feedback
Go with your emotions. In every photo I take, I am usually feeling a very strong emotion. Whether it be sadness, joy, love, or any other you can think of, I just go with it. Also, NEVER be afraid to be a little crazy. People think I am weird for carrying flour around with me wherever I go, but that's OK! Flour (if thrown in the air) can make a really interesting cloud effect to add drama to a photo. Experiment with other angles as well. Usually people photograph women from a higher angle- but I got low to showcase a sense of strength and fearlessness. Another thing that people tell me is that my work is "too dark". Don't let people criticize your art style because it does not fit in their category of art. Stay true to yourself and your style while keeping an open mind to change through growth as an artist.
