Behind The Lens

Location

20 minutes north of Havelock, Ontario on the back roads to Cordova Falls, I saw this doe and fawn in the depths of the winter snow. When I stopped to take my photo they were much closer then dashed towards the forest edge where they took a moment and glanced back a me before disappearing into the woods.

Time

Leaving home at 7am, I took a detour down the back roads after a winters storm, nowing that the newly fallen snow would make for some beautiful landscape photos. To my surprise around 10am these two emerged from the forest. I quickly change to my telephoto lens to capture this doe and fawn.

Lighting

Still having some softer morning light helped. Any later and I would have had a harder time with the contrast with the snow. It also allowed for some interesting shadowing in the background.

Equipment

This was a canon xti, 70-300 lens, no tripod, no flash.

Inspiration

Deer were plentiful on my drive in this location, but none that stayed around long enough for me to capture a photo of. So when I was given this chance to capture these two beautiful animals I literally jumped out of car to capture this moment.

Editing

I did a slight exposure adjustment of my jpeg image.

In my camera bag

I now shot with my canon 70d, this photo was taken with a canon xti. I always have my 100- 400mm lens and my 18-55mm. I always have available a tripod and mono pod and use if the photo opportunity allows me. This photo did not allow me time to set up so I had to hand hold my camera and lens for this shot. I also carry extra batteries and flash.

Feedback

I always keep a look out for anything interesting from landscapes to bugs to wildlife. You never know when the perfect opportunity may arise, always have your camera ready and close by.
