Behind The Lens

Location

Kawawaymog (Round) Lake, Access Point-Algonquin Provincial Park

Time

Morning sunrise 7:29am September 26th

Lighting

Get out early and to the locations before the sun comes up or goes down. Scout your location so that you can have yourself situated for your shot. Your time is limited for the morning fog and the soft lighting. For this shot I was in a canoe, I had paddled for 20 minutes to get to this particular spot then waited for the sun as it came over the tree line. The warm hues that come with the sunrise or sunset will complement to peacefulness of your theme.

Equipment

Canon EOS 70D, Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens, no flash, hand held while sitting a canoe.

Inspiration

Early mornings inspire me during the fall time. It is a perfect time to capture those foggy mornings. I paddled out to this particular spot and waited for the morning sun to warm the scene. Certain parts of the composition attract your attention more then others. The layers of trees and the visual strength of the large tree to the right of the picture dominate the foreground. The fog that lies between the other layered trees may seem to be less significant in the photo but still complete the composition, and the small rippling effect on the water added to the mood and tranquil feeling.

Editing

The only post-processing would have been a slight adjustment to the saturation.

In my camera bag

I like to always keep in mind "don't leave home with out it" you never know what equipment you will need. I carry in my knapsack camera bag my camera Canon EOS 70D, 18-55mm, 28-80mm, 70-300mm, 105mm macro, my favorite lens Canon 100-400mm and Canon Speedlite 430EXII flash.

Feedback

Scout out your location in advance, remember you have a very short window to capture the rising or setting sun and the fog burns off quickly once the sun comes up.
