This was an old stone boat shead on the coast of Tasmania. it was not signposted or given any significance at all but was simply sitting by the edge of the road along one of the manu beaches that we drove past. I love the colours in the rock and the tin contrasted against the sky and the water

Behind The Lens

Location

We were driving from Sorrell, up the coast of Tasmania and we found a spot that had a really nice old stone fence. We could see the roof of the boat shed but we had to go around to the other side of the beach to access it. As it turns out it was very worth it.

Time

Unfortunately it was about 11 in the morning but there was a bit of cloud around to disperse the sunlight.

Lighting

This was all natural light, no flash, no assistance, except for the clouds.

Equipment

This was taken with my 40D using a 100-400 zoom lens. It was on a tripod at the time.

Inspiration

I love old stone buildings, I just can't help myself, I take pictures of them all. What made this one stand out fro me was the colouring of the rocks and the rusty roof. I thought they complemented each other and i wanted to show of the earthy red tones in both.

Editing

I took this a a HDR to combat the harsh late morning light, I also used a blue filter on the sky to bring out the colour of the clouds.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my 700D and 40D with a 24-105mm zoom lens, a 150-500mm zoom lens and a 100mm macro lens. I can usually get away with this combination for most circumstances and it is lighter to carry than other combos. I also carry with me 2 flashes, a tripod, an ND filter and a collection of spare batteries. The bits that I try to remember to take with me but usually find i have forgotten when i need then are suncream, bug repellant and a water bladder which has its own special pocket in my vest and yet constantly gets left behind.

Feedback

We don't often have much of a plan when we go on holidays or even just out for a drive. It is nice to know what sort of things are available in the region but leave time for those moments when you just catch a glimpse of something by the side of the road and go exploring. Make sure your kit has all the basics in it that will get you a wide variety of shots without weighing you down so much that you can't walk anywhere.
