Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the fire hall in Renfrew ON. Canada.

Time

The photo was taken mid afternoon as the sun shone in through the windows of the historic fire hall.

Lighting

The florescent lights made it a little challenging to get a nice white balance so the reds looked red.

Equipment

This photo was taken with a Canon 7D c/w Canon 24-105 f/4 L mounted on a Manfroto tripod

Inspiration

Knowing I was about to retire with 41 years of service (the last 26 as Fire Chief in Renfrew) I wanted to take with me some memories of the department I poured my heart into. I came down from my office and noticed that firefighter Whalen had left his helmet on the fender of the old 1951 Lafrance pumper truck. I returned later that evening to the fire hall with my camera and tripod and proceeded to take this photo.

Editing

I used Adobe Photoshop CS5 for post processing and added a slight poster edge to emphasize the grain in the helmet.

In my camera bag

My Lower camera bag carries a two Canon 7D bodies along with a 24-105mm f/4 L lens, a Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L lens, and a 17-40mm f/4 L lens. Also when I head out into the fired I carry a light weight MePhoto tripod and a Manfroto monopod.

If you see a great shot but don't have your camera with you take the time to go back and try and recreate what you saw.
