Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a Patent Pending concert at The Gramercy Theatre in New York City.

Time

It was a night time concert. The band came or around 9 PM. During the day I had taken time out to prep my equipment. I had charged my camera batteries, cleared my sd cards, and checked all my camera settings so that I would have a successful shoot.

Lighting

The lighting, like at most concerts was constantly changing. The Gramercy Theatre had done a great job that night of keeping the performers in the spot lights so they were fairly well lit. This was key to getting this image since I knew I had to shoot at a fast shutter speed to freeze the motion in this image.

Equipment

I shot this image using a Nikon D3S in shutter priority mode to catch the action.

Inspiration

I had spoke with the band before the show. They told me that they were jumpers and that no one had ever really captured a photo of them that could really bring across the energy that they brought to the stage. I set my sights on capturing an image of them mid jump. Shooting from the pit I was at a low enough angle to really show the height the lead singer had when he jumped. I had focused on the singer and didn't realize I had captured the rest of the band mid jump until I got back home later.

Editing

Since they are punk pop I felt a grunge feel to this photo wold help bring out the energy that the band brings every night when they hit the stage. The band loved the shot and it later became a concert tee-shirt.

In my camera bag

I carry a Nikon D3S with a Tamron 24-70 and Sigma 70-200. recently I picked up the Tamron 15-30 and sometimes bring that along as well. I prefer to travel as light as I can though and like to plan my shots beforehand whenever possible. Being familiar with the band and venue really helps.

Feedback

Know the band. Do your research. It is fairly easy to do. Just go online and look at what others have shot of the band before you. That way you will know before you arrive a few simple things that are really important. Look at which hand the singer holds his mic with. Try to be on the opposite side, so that the singers face is exposed and not blocked by the mic. Musicians tend to always be on the same side of the stage every show. So if you are looking to get shots of the bassist, look at what others have shot on previous night in other venues. If the bassist is on the left in other venues, he likely will be on the left the night you are shooting. When you get there make sure you set up on the left side so you will get the shot your shot.
