The viewer’s eye is taken everywhere in the image, but in a logical, sequential and pleasing journey. This composition allows the viewers eye to travel well throughout it, repeatedly. The stopping points are intentional and well positioned. The use of light, lens distortion, contrast and exposure helps the viewer’s eye make this journey effortlessly. "Use of light and contrast is incredibly important in a strong image. The textures of the water (I believe) flowing behind the subject add interest and a wonderful backdrop to this subject. The positioning of the man, his hat, head, body, coat and leg movement (especially with the slightly blurred feet) is truly perfect. I wouldn’t change a thing. The placement of this subject just outside the rule of thirds creates a bit of extra tension that I personally love. I love the low‐key look and feeling it all creates. It has a story, and a highly evocative feeling about it that only well‐composed images can create. I love its simplicity and drama so much. This image definitely deserves to be a top image in this competition full of very worthy images." - Lisa Langell

"This image caught my eye immediately. Impact and composition are tightly related and this image has both in spades! The braided roots of the trees lend beautiful diagonal lines, texture and an entire experience alone for the viewer! In addition, the tree trunks framing either side of the image provide a clever composition with Mount Hood (I believe) in the background. It is a wonderful composition that truly represents Oregon. The title and image go well together, too (I always love smart titles.) The processing is also excellent because the photographer’s choice of light and contrast placement illustrates masterful skill in how he/she prefers the viewer’s eye to travel through the image. The touches of light on the roots do not overpower the mountain. Rather, they offer perfect balance between the two. I love this image. It’s original and not only represents excellent composition, but beautiful fine art photography. It deserves a top placing in this very competitive competition." - Lisa Langell
