Behind The Lens

Location

This drone image was taken in central Iowa near Winterset during the harvest season. The harvest team consisted of a John Deere combine, the grain transfer hopper-wagon pulled by a John Deere tractor, and the grain hopper transport semi. With the combine running non-stop through the corn field the tractor-driven transfer hopper wagon was busy transferring corn from the combine to the transport semi. The team was able to pick the 80-acre corn field in short order--a fascinating process to observe. 4

Time

The "harvest series" of drone images was taken during the golden hour.

Lighting

Lighting in this series was a challenge while I waited for the equipment to pass on the "sunny side" of the corn field. The combine left a dust trail to work around. Daylight was slipping away creating eager anticipation for the next pass of the combine and other equipment before the light faded to dusk.

Equipment

I piloted a DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone for this series. I removed the lens filter for this series as it was late in the afternoon.

Inspiration

I grew up in Iowa but moved to Florida around twenty years ago. I miss experiencing the seasons in rural Iowa---spring, summer and fall harvest so any time I'm in the Midwest, I have my photo bag and drone kit close at hand.

Editing

Post-processing for me includes Lightroom, Photo Shop and the OnOne Suite. Very little post was involved in processing this image--brightness and contrast adjustments in Lightroom and color grading in OnOne Edit.

In my camera bag

My photo kit consists of a Canon R3 and a Canon 5D Mark IV along with a Canon 15mm Prime, Canon 16-35 zoon, Canon 24-70 zoom, Canon RF 100-500 zoom and a Canon 400mm DO Prime lens. I carry a Canon 580EX flash when low light is anticipated. I keep a Manfroto tripod close at hand in case I encounter a long-exposure opportunity. Also in the kit is a series of ND filters along with circular polarizers.

Feedback

My best advice is just "get out there" with your camera and be ready for photo opportunities. Some of the most rewarding images aren't taken with high-end cameras and equipment--shoot with what's available. Being in the right place at the right time is more about experience than luck and being available.
