Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was captured on one of my morning beach walks in Nambucca Heads, on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, Australia

Time

I leave home about half an hour prior to the sun making its appearance and head to the main beach where I park my car. From there I either walk north toward Black Rock Beach or South toward Wellington Rock. on this particular morning, I headed south and by the time I got to Shelly Beach the sun had already just peaked over the horizon, however from this beach, the sun was hiding just to the south of the point.

Lighting

Having arrived at Shelly Beach and seeing the colours in the sky, I wanted to make this photo special, so I left the beach and from the car park I waited between the trees to frame the subject. I class myself as an "opportunistic" photographer. I generally do not wait around slot for the perfect lighting. I just leave home hoping to arrive at the right time. I guess that is why I'm not a bird photographer, as I do not have the patience to hide and wait for hours to get that one bird I really want. The settings on my camera were fairly basic, using my wide angled lens, I had it set to 20mm. The aperture was set to auto, iso at 500 and shutter speed at 1/250. Normally I would shoot in raw mode, but I really wanted to try something different, so I switched to landscape mode, turned on the High Dynamic Range to auto and set the effect to Art Standard. I must admit, I was impressed with the result.

Equipment

I never take my tripod with me on these walks unless the surf is pumping at there is a chance of videoing the surfers. I have a Canon 80D, on this morning I used my sigma 10- 20mm wide angle zoom lens.

Inspiration

I'm always looking out for a beautiful sunrise or sunset. Heading out in the early hours of the morning really opens up the opportunity to succeed in this. This particular day I was in the right spot at the right time.

Editing

I do not like doing too much to my photos, I will enhance colours slightly as the camera often missed something. However, in this case, because I used the HDR mode, and had it set to standard art effect, the colours were not touched, so I just framed the photo and watermarked it.

In my camera bag

In my car I carry all my equipment, from a tripod to various lenses. I am not made of money so nothing really exciting in the equipment. A sigma 70 - 300mm zoom, a 50mm canon prime lens, the 10 - 20mm zoom I used on this day and I have just purchased a 2nd hand signs 150 - 600mm zoom for my surf photography and videos. When I do my beach walks I do not carry a bag, so I make a decision at the car as to which lens I will take with me and just carry the camera with that lens already attached.

Feedback

My advice would be to go out and see what you can do? When I first started photography I really had no idea what I was doing, I am mostly self taught, I did go online to get some tips, but for me it really has been a case of trial and error I did have to learn about lighting and the different purposes of aperture, shutter speed etc, but I really shoot to give me incentive to walk. I know that is not why most people do photography, but for me, who can suffer from depression I feel it is very therapeutic. The only other advice I can give is aim to go out for the lighting you want, make the photo interesting by framing the shit if possible, do not be afraid of people being in your shot or other things, they can help tell a story. Apart from that, be open to trying new things (for me, the HDR was only a new thing I had recently "discovered" and have fun. Never be too serious and don't be afraid to make a mistake - unless you are doing wedding photos. That I will not do as I cannot go back and try again. They scare me.
