The period is about 30 seconds, it starts with characteristic powerful noise. Eventually it reaches the trail, and even the strong and heavy have to kneel to protect themselves.

In the regional language "Frisian" where I live (Holland) it's called a "simmertwirre" (a twirl of summer)

Behind The Lens

Location

Torres Del Paine

Time

Late dawn of autumn morning

Lighting

The natural light condition of Patagonia are unique in the sense that one can get an obscure cloudy part in the scene together with a high contrast sunny part. As winter grows deep, the dawn starts very late and is stretched until noon, creating special color and atmosphere. spending the autumn and winter Patagonia (which is known to be off season), I have seen the change into short days and long dusk.

Equipment

Canon 5Dmk2, EF24-105L4

Inspiration

What I wanted to express in this photo is the visualization of the force of nature. Here combined the strong gusts and the endless dusk of Torres del Paine. That would be the third time I have entered the park. the special colors and lights I have already seen. The wind gusts of Torres Del Paine are famous and I have experienced them several times, and I have seen the photographed effect, in the summer of the year before. It starts with a very strong roar, then the water spray is visible, eventually the wind and the spray reaches the path forcing you to take cover as it is very strong.

Editing

The special light condition forced me to implement a digital GND, and since I have quiet large dynamic range it worked reasonably. added a little bit of sharpening and contrast. I think that is one of the photos when I understood I must add to my equipment a GND filter.

In my camera bag

except from the camera I usually have two lenses of the three EF85 1.2L, EF16-35 2.8L, EF24-105 4L, and the EX 580 II.

Feedback

The advice I can offer is the deep autumn and winter though are off season are much better in lighting condition in Patagonia in general. the special light of down the famous red pillar photos were taken in the winter. To shout such an event you have to be patient and experience several instances of the gust finding the ideal spot in the middle of the trail. have fun while doing it!
