Location
The location of this photo is Oia, the beautiful coastal cliffside village on the northwestern tip of the volcanic Greek island of Santorini. Famous for its vineyards and white-washed homes carved into the rugged clifftops overlooking a caldera within the Aegean sea. The famous blue domes are the focal point of the composition and are the churches of Agios Spiridonas (Saint Spyridon) and Anastaseos (the Church of the Resurrection). Built side by side at the edge of the cliffs on this Cycladic island in the Aegean Sea. Palea Kameni, and Nea Kameni are the two small islands in the distance formed from volcanic black lava rock. A massive volcanic eruption thirty-five hundred years ago formed the Caldera and the present-day archipelago. Legend suggests that Santorini is the site where the lost city of Atlantis once stood.Time
The photograph was taken in the early afternoon of September 15th, 2022 while randomly exploring the multilevel cliffside village of Oia.Lighting
This image uses natural sunlight light during mid-September when the sun has just begun its transition into the early stages of autumn.Equipment
The photo was taken with an old iPhone XR from 2018, Shiftcam Pro Grip, and a 1.33 Anamorphic ProLens attachment on the default 26mm f1.8 Apple iPhone Rear Camera using a 16:9 aspect ratio setting.Inspiration
My wife and I were wandering around Oia browsing various shops, restaurants, and art galleries when we turned a corner to this spectacular view. I typically utilize my inexpensive camera rig for anamorphic video footage, which was all I had with me at the time. However, this breathtaking view inspired a still. The scenery took my breath away this photo hardly does it justice. Most photos of these domes are taken from the East facing West. There is typically a line of people waiting to take a photo from that side of the domes. What separates this photo is that it was taken facing East. Making it more unique than 99% of photos out there.Editing
I used Lightroom 4 for minor color enhancement bringing out the saturation, vibrance, and overall exposure. In my camera bag
I typically carry a Canon 7D Body, EFS 55-250mm 1.1m/3.6ft Zoom, an EFS 10-18MM 0.22m/0.7ft wide angle, various neutral density filters, lens hoods, and a 4k GoPro knockoff. In addition to the Shiftcam pro grip and Anamorphic lens adapter for my smartphone. The Shiftcam pro grip and the anamorphic lens were the only gear I had with me the afternoon this photo was taken.Feedback
Always have a camera with you at all times. One never knows when inspiration will strike or if the situation is a perfect opportunity. It's often when we least expect that we capture our greatest work. I have found that it isn't about the most expensive gear, moreover, possessing a solid knowledge of how to use the tools accessible to you is key. This comes from decades of practice and years of experimenting. So get out there and keep shooting where ever you go.
