Behind The Lens

Location

So there's an incredible ruined stately home near me called Dunmore House, it featured in the first episode of Outlander but is now really overgrown with woodland and it's a beautiful location. I've worked with Kali before and I know she loves to shoot urban locations so I approached her about the idea, and she came up with these amazing gowns, which gave the whole shoot a 'haunted' vibe.

Time

We went early morning, and it was about an hours hike to get to the location on foot. But it wasn't really important as it was shot kind of indoors, so I had to use mobile strobes for the lighting.

Lighting

I used a Pixapro 600 battery operated with a medium softbox. I was only looking for a nice directional light to shape the foreground / model. I used a bit of high speed sync to make sure I could capture the background with natural light coming in from the windows and where the roof was.

Equipment

I shoot on a Canon 5D MKIV and I was using my EF 24-105 lens. As I mentioned before I had a Pixapro 600 (manual) and a medium sized softbox.

Inspiration

I love Rembrandt (Churrasco) style lighting and really wanted to attempt doing some outdoor photography. I have a love of history and old buildings and I just couldn't resist trying to capture some of the atmosphere of this old building.

Editing

So I like to keep things in camera as much as possible but it never works out that way, on this image I did a good bit of retouching taking out some vandalism (there was a lot of it) on the walls and then colour adjusted the tonality of the image, especially a bit of desaturation on the background and making the dress pop a bit more. I also added a little bit of light effects where the beam of light from my strobe comes in.

In my camera bag

I have my Canon 5D MKIV, my trusty EF 24-105 which I almost always use, I also have a prime 50mm lens and an EF 70-200. Other than that I have a bunch of ND filters and attachments and remotes for the strobes. I cut down the kit I normally carry on this shoot to just the 24-105mm and 50mm and only took one strobe and stand as I knew I had quite a hike to the location - even then it was quite the workout...

Feedback

When I went to the shoot location I hadn't done a reccy beforehand, I just relied on shots I'd seen on peoples blogs, and although this is a really spontaneous and fun way to shoot I regretted it, as I spent way to long exploring the location and shooting off the cuff.... if I had done a reccy I'd have definitely brought more lights and be able to spend more time crafting the shots. So - do a reccy... Also bring a waterproof floor cover of some description... for both you and the model.... I spent a lot of time dodging broken bottles and needles in amongst the ruins.
