Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my mother’s garden. My mother takes great pride in her gardening and has ever since I was a small child! My obsession and love for nature definitely stems from her!

Time

I took this photo in the middle of the day. Summer had came to an end and fall was just starting to approach, so the direct sunlight wasn’t too much. This was around noon and made for the perfect timing to capture this lovely bee enjoying the remaining flowers before the season ended.

Lighting

The sun was directly overhead in this shot. Since this was taken in between changes of seasons between summer and fall, the lighting was not too harsh and actually made it much easier to work with the camera’s settings to capture this shot as seamlessly as possible.

Equipment

I shoot full manual with a Canon Rebel T8i. I used a macro lens to capture as much detail as possible. Macro shots are my favorite! Lens used: S35mm f/2.8 macro (Canon lens) Camera settings: - 1/160 sec (shutter speed)- ISO 320 - f/7.1

Inspiration

I love macro shots. I had just purchased my macro lens and wanted to photograph anything and everything possible. I was so eager to play and with the new lens! Flowers and wildlife are my favorite, so I headed to my mother’s garden! I saw the cutest fuzzy bumblebee gathering pollen on this beautiful mum flower. The bee was very calm and tame (I called him pollen drunk) so I was able to get very good, detailed shots before he flew away. He actually stayed still and let me photograph him for longer than I expected! I wanted to get as much detail as close as possible and be able to share with the world the beauty of these little harmless pollinators!

Editing

I used Adobe Lightroom CC for simple post processing. I adjusted a few simple things such as shadows, highlights, and vibrance to bring out the true detail and definition of this photo.

In my camera bag

My camera bag is actually a backpack with adjustable compartments inside. I always carry a multitude of lenses in my bag. I like to think of it as a ‘one of each’ kind of thing. I have a general 18-55mm lens for your typical all around lens. I also carry my macro lens, a wide angle 10-18mm lens, and a simple 55-250mm zoom lens. By carrying these different types of lenses, that allows me to be able to capture a multitude of different types of photos. I also carry an extra (charged) battery, my camera charger, and a simple cleaning kit. I have a small simple point and shoot 35mm film camera in there as well just because! I like to make sure I have what I may need, but also try not to keep too much so I’m not too cluttered or unorganized with a overly heavy bag. Last but not least, the obvious, my camera! Usually I have it in my hand and my camera bag on my back.

Feedback

My advice for capturing a photo similar to this (macro, insects) would be to have patience! That is the number one key to getting the right shot that has helped me the most. Patience! There will be times you will be trying to capture an insect (or anything close up) with a macro lens, but there can be experiences of frustration. There may be times you will encounter a fast moving subject, wind blowing, insects flying away, etc that may test your patience and seem to not allow you to get that shot you’re after. Be patient, just keep photographing away and you will still get the practice! I say keep shooting and just practice as well! Open your mind to new ideas. Play with different angles, don’t be afraid to sit or kneel on the ground! Most importantly, have fun and believe in yourself! Capture your visions and share those beautiful photos with the world!
