Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Holland Park, London. My understanding of photography is self taught, a course which I am still undertaking. It has been a game of trial and error to improve the picture in the manner that it tells the intended story.

Time

This was an incidental capture. I was spending my time in the Holland Park on a weekend, an attempt to escape the rush of city life of London, when this squirrel landed from the tree above, right infront of me. It was May 22, 2022 around 12:36 pm.

Lighting

For those who have been to Holland Park will know the density of trees on the way. The path is always covered so even on a summer afternoon, the amount of light is very low. I had to lure this fluffy superhero to turn aside to get some light for the capture.

Equipment

I use Sony RX100 VII, a compact camera, for photography which always move around with me because of its size. This shot was taken at 72mm (zoomed from 35mm equivalent lens of RX100) at F11.

Inspiration

Imagination. In Deadpool, Ryan's charecter hypes the audience up for Gina's landing before the final showdown. This is a feeling that every superhero fan is well versed with. When this squirrel landed infront of me with a hand on ground and another to its chest, I saw a superhero in it.

Editing

Picture had slight post processing. Textures were enhanced (to adjust for the lost sharpness due to high f point), while reducing clarity (to minimize smoothness).

In my camera bag

The only equipments I have on me is the Sony RX100 VII and a Samsung S22. As a student, I have been trying to generate and save funds to get a good gear, but it's tough. Regardless, these two are always in the bag and the compact camera comes in handy for quick take out and shoot, while giving complete control in hand to adjust all variables (ISO, wb, aperture etc.) so can't complain.

Feedback

Planning and shooting is good, but it is important to let the mind be free in its imagination. Everything reminds of or resembles something. Might not be the version everyone knows or have scene, but the version that the photographer can show to viewers. It is the general awareness which helps in capturing unplanned, unadulterated and yet very beautiful moments. My best wishes. I am still learning, and, I hope, so are you.
