Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my Zinnia garden, right beside my house.

Time

This photo was taken mid afternoon. I remember watching the hummingbirds flit around the Zinnias and wondering if I could somehow manage to sneak up on them so they didn’t leave. In bare feet, I quietly and slowly walked to a well cap platform that was parallel to the garden and sat down. I waited there quietly, not making a sound and I was able to shooting away.

Lighting

I think because it was mid afternoon and the sun was high and behind me, I had absolute optimal lighting that day.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon 5600 with a 70-300 lens.

Inspiration

I’ve been trying to get a nice shot of a hummingbird for a couple of years, but they’re so hard to catch just randomly. I don’t have a hummingbird feeder so I never really had access to a source for constant activity. When I saw a lot of birds feeding in my Zinnia garden, I was excited to get out and get shooting.

Editing

Nothing beyond cropping.

In my camera bag

I always carry my 70-300mm lens. It’s by far my favourite. I also usually carry a 50mm.

Feedback

Have patience and create areas to attract the birds.
