Behind The Lens

Location

Every year I see fields of the straw bales around the countryside as I drive and I keep meaning to find the right time to stop and take photos. Many times I have been too late and they bales have been collected from the fields before I return with camera at a later date. This particular day I saw some fields with the bales that were obviously reached by turning right and going around a country lane off the main road. Luckily, I found the correct turn and was soon able to park safely off the road. This was at Patching, West Sussex, just after I had originally had my hopes dashed at a different field cos the bales had been gathered in.

Time

10.30am on a Summer morning. I parked safely and wandered through an open gateway into the field. My initial shot was with the tree on the opposite side of the frame, but the bales were too distant in that pic. So, I walked further left to get closer to the bales and positioned them and the tree to what was a suitably balanced composition in my mind. Photography is very subjective, so what seems right for one person would usually need to be altered in some way to please other miinds.

Lighting

The position of the sun at this time of the morning was perfect and I used a polarising filter to assist in bringing out the colours in the scene.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 7dmk2, with a 24-70mm f4 zoom and shot it on the short end of that zoom at 26mm as I composed the shot to my liking. As it was handheld and I wanted good depth of field, I used iso800 and a shutter speed of 1/100 and that gave me f20

Inspiration

the answer to this is in my answer at the top about where I took it. I had been meaning to take this type of pic for several years and finally I have done so.

Editing

A little, just to richen slightly the colour to assist in giving a bit more detail.

In my camera bag

The 7dmk2 is my only camera body, though i would dearly love to get a 5dmkiv. The 24-70 is my main lens and is a wonderful piece of kit. I also have a Canon 10-18mm wide angle which I only use when the 24-70 won't give me a wide enough shot. I also shoot motorsport pics whenever I get the opportunity and for that I have a Canon 100-400mm zoom - the original mk1 version which is now very well used.

Feedback

Have the ideas and bear them in mind, cos you don't always get the chances the first time you see the opportunity. Persevere and eventually the chance will come. Remember particularly the rules around the countryside. Park safely and considerately. It is often said the main rules are, leave only footprints and take only memories.
