Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the beach at the old airport at Kailua, on the Big Island in Hawaii. I had taken a few with palm trees silhouetted against the sky and was on my way back towards the group of people I was on holiday with when this composition struck me as worth stopping for.

Time

At sunset, so mid to late evening and this was mid July

Lighting

I liked the colours in the sky and the way they reflected in the sea and I noticed the line of dark volcanic rocks would create some interest and add to the dimension.

Equipment

At the time, my camera was a Canon EOS 7d mkii and I was using my Canon 24-70mm lens with a variable ND filter. As I was on a 3 week holiday and had to watch the weight of my luggage, I didn't have a tripod with me - so I used the rocks I was standing on to place the camera on a sturdy and flat surface.

Inspiration

the reasons are the same as the answer about the lighting - I just liked the colours and reflection. Being able to see the incoming waves helps the composition in my eye.

Editing

I did a little processing in Lightroom, I wanted to boost the colours a little, but I also wanted to bring out shadow detail so that there was detail in the rocks instead of them being a total silhouette.

In my camera bag

My trusty old 7d mkii recently started to play-up, reckon it's connected to how long I have had it and the number of photos it's taken. So now, I have been treated to a brand new Canon EOS 5d mkiv which I have been hankering after for quite a while. In addition to the 24-70mm f4 zoom, I have a Canon 10-18mm wide angle zoom that will not be compatible with the new camera but I can still use with the old one. I also have a Canon 100-400mm zoom that gets used mainly for the motorsport I shoot.

Feedback

Having foreground interest in a photo is something I find important. One very useful tip is to be patient - we had one week in Hawaii and the first 4 nights didn't yield a sunset but the last 3 did. I was fortunate to be there with a family that had been there before and knew some nice locations. One other thing I find particularly useful, is the live view on the rear screen of the camera - I find using that makes choosing composition easier than trying to squint through the viewfinder.
