Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo outside at my home studio, in a large hayfield to give me a more open field of view.

Time

I had been editing photos all day, and I decided to clear my mind and take a walk at 5 p.m. I had no intention of taking any pictures, but when your puppy is posing for you, it’s hard to pass up a good shot.

Lighting

When I took this photo the natural light was working in my favor, and the subject was enjoying soaking up that natural light, so it just worked out to be a great shot.

Equipment

This shot was captured with a Kodak Pixpro 40x zoom camera.

Inspiration

I was just taking a walk to clear my head, and my puppy was warming up in the sun, so I couldn’t pass up the shot.

Editing

I did very little post processing to this image. A little saturation boost, and I sharpened it up some.

In my camera bag

My equipment bag has changed a few times since this photo, but at the moment it consist of a LUMIX S5, a 20-60mm lens with a hood, a hot shoe mounted flash, a diffuser, extra battery, and a tripod.

Feedback

When capturing a image like this, always make sure to position yourself so the sun is behind you, but be mindful that you don’t cast a shadow into the shot. A little bit of a zoom helps a lot with this. I would also recommend someone starting out to use aperture priority when taking a shot like this.
