Location
I captured this while on expedition on a playa bed in a remote location in the Black Rock DesertTime
1AMLighting
The moon with overcast and dust storm made for great diffused lighting at relatively low ISO and closed aperatureEquipment
Canon 5D Mark III with a manfroto tripod and 24mm 1.4 LInspiration
This was basically a quick capture that fits my objectives as a photographer- to capture adventurers in surreal landscapes with minimal equipment, effort, and direction.Editing
Processing only involved minor exposure corrections in Light Room, but due to the amount of light available when the image was taken, allowing for low ISO and slightly increased aperture for sharpness, there was little noise correction, sharpening, lifting of shadows needed in post.In my camera bag
I will typically carry one wide angle and one telephoto with 1-2 speedlights when backpacking, and when in the offroad vehicles I will take everything listed below. Once you understand manual mode the basics of shooting at night are the same, and should come pretty intuitively. Get to know the range of High ISO that you can correct in post in your camera, and that will set the usable limits for the rest of your settings. An external timer will help you get past the 30 second exposure limit most DSLR's have. Consider a high end headlamp or flashlight to assist in focusing in the dark.
