Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in one of my gardens. This is my perennial echinacea plant in front of my perennial grasses.

Time

This was taken late afternoon in July of 2022. This summer was a very dry summer. I was fortunate enough to have quite a few monarchs visit this summer. Planting native plants and providing a small shallow water source is a great way to attract them.

Lighting

It was later in the afternoon and the sun was lower in the sky and the surrounding grasses provided a more diffuse light.

Equipment

This shot was taken with my Nikon D7500 and my 50 mm lens. It was shot at ISO 100, f-5.0 and 1/500 spec using spot metering.

Inspiration

I love gardening and taking photos of all of the visitors to my various gardens. It is important to garden for wildlife to help preserve our beautiful planet and all the wonderful creatures that we share it with. While sitting outside watching for visitors this beautiful monarch was enjoying the echinacea. I have also been trying to get some photos of bees and I was blessed when this one decided to join the monarch. Just reminded me of the saying 'Sharing is caring'.

Editing

I thought this photo really benefitted from the dark vignette to draw you eye to the focus of the two insects. I also bumped up the contrast and the shadows to really bring out the colors more.

In my camera bag

I am always learning and usually carry both of my kit lenses for my Nikon D7500 with me. I also keep my nifty fifty 50 mm lens with me. Always have a spare battery with me as I can get a bit carried away and not always pay attention to my battery life.

Feedback

Be patient, be prepared and move slowly. Insects will come alight nearby if you are still. To get a better angle just move slowly and quietly. Quiet your shutter also helps to keep from disturbing them.
