This photo was taken at the Los Angeles zoo in summer of 2021. It was a really hot day and the flamingos were out and about just beautiful.Time
The photo was taken in the afternoon, around 1pm.Lighting
The photo is taken with all natural light. It was a bright summer day and the light was just amazing.Equipment
I use the canon T6 camera with Canon’s 75-300mm lens. I love that lens! It allows me to be far away and zoom in tight on my subject without disturbing them and capture intimate moments that I would not be able to get if I had to get close to my subject. I can really be the voyeur, the fly on the wall. This is great for any kind of animal photography.Inspiration
I went to the zoo that day because I was doing some research for children’s book that I’m writing. I needed photographs of different African animals and while I was there I just decided to shoot the entire zoo. It turned out to be a wonderful day and the flamingos were so elegant and statuesque I had to shoot them.Editing
Actually I did very little post processing. I am ported the image into Adobe Lightroom and increase clarity and a little bit of contrast. I did a little color correcting and cropped it. That’s it.In my camera bag
I carry my canon T6 camera with the standard kit 18mm - 35mm lens and 75mmto 300mm lens. I also carry my Neewer TT560 speed lite flash and I’m beginning to carry my yongnuo fixed 50mm prime lens. It’s great for low light and when you want shallow focus because it has an F stop 1.8.Feedback
If you’re at the zoo or someplace public and you want candid shots, always carry a lens that goes up to 300 mm. It could be a 75-300mm or 70 - 300mm or fixed 300 mm lens, but having the ability to shoot from a distance really helps to capture life as it’s happening without becoming a part of the scene or disturbing your subject. I like it cause I think he gives me better shots.
