Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the north of Moravia in the Czech Republic. It is a natural protected area with ponds and wetlands where many species of birds nest. For those who specialize in birds, this is a paradise. Alders and oaks grow mainly in wetlands, without the intervention of human hands. It is such a small wilderness in the middle of civilization - an industrial area.

Time

This is probably one of my weird pictures with a story. It took a relatively long time to create - I walked around the area for a year before I found a suitable composition. When the composition was suitable, I waited for the right time of year. Then I chose the appropriate light according to the positions of the Sun. In the end, I chose May in the morning when the greenery is fresh and the Sun is low on the horizon. Even though I had a tripod, I was still sinking in the mud at the selected place. And the ubiquitous mosquitoes. Well, just perfect. Then I waited for a breeze so the image wouldn't be static. This was taken on May 6, 2012 at 8:17 am.

Lighting

On the day I went to take this picture, a wild event happened to me in the forest. In the distance I hear the sounds of someone running. I called myself "Athlete". However, quickly "it" was getting closer to me, the sounds were getting louder and louder. "Oh, he probably won't be an athlete". The bushes prevented me from identifying the source of the strange noises. My heart started pounding louder and louder. Finally, 10m in front of me, a wild pig ran out and straight at me. I had a 15 kg rucksack on my back, a tripod in my hand, my head flashed "I'm not going to be a doe, so I'm going to defend myself? Well, I stood there as if cut. My heart was pounding so hard that it wanted to jump out. Finally, the wild pig ran 1m around me and disappeared as quickly as it appeared.

Equipment

It was shot on a Pentax K-5, with an PENTAX-DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 lens. Tripod GITZO, 3 sections with long spikes.

Inspiration

At an exhibition in Prague, photographs of a nature reserve located in the USA were exhibited. I don't remember the exact place anymore. This area was originally to be reclaimed with the planned construction of a road and an industrial zone. When a local photographer learned about this plan, he decided to save this natural area. Unfortunately, I can't remember the photographer's name, it's been 20 years. He took many photographs, organized exhibitions all over the USA. Thanks to his activity, he popularized this place, and the investor withdrew from his plan under public pressure. Thanks to his activity, this area was declared a nature reserve. I still remember how he had to deal with taking photos from the boat. In order to preserve a static image, he made long tripods of 3-4 m. As I was taking this picture and I kept falling, I remembered that I would have to get a longer tripod. Well, in the end, a longer tripod was not needed.

Editing

Landscape photos usually require a lot of processing. In this particular case, I developed RAW 1 time. Then I proceeded to basic adjustments in Lightroom (exposure, flares, balanced histogram, lens correction)

In my camera bag

I'm wearing a large Lowepro travel backpack for landscape photography. In my backpack I usually have a Pentax K-5 body, at least three lenses (smc Pentax 16-50mm F2.8, 50-135mm F2.8, 60-250 F4), an LED light with a range of 100m, a headlamp, LEE filters, a cleaning kit lenses, iPad tablet (for viewing photos on a larger surface), first aid kit, raincoat. A tripod is a matter of course. Then I wear a cowboy hat, which is very practical for a photographer (it provides good shade and protection from the rain when taking pictures).

Feedback

When a place catches your eye, it's a challenge. If you have photo equipment and the light is good, don't hesitate and take pictures. However, at home (when the emotions have passed) you will find that something is missing from the picture. Don't be discouraged, return to the place and aim it with an idea of how it would look in different conditions (morning, evening, with fog, with rain, with snow, with colored leaves, ...). Until one day you come again (maybe for the twentieth time) to the same place and say wow. So I wish you good light, patience and a bit of luck. As the saying goes "Being in the right place at the right time" favors the prepared.
