Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the 2022 Chicago Blues Festival. Millenium Park with The Pritzker Pavillion is a wonderful place to photograph special events.

Time

Midafternoon of a June day with no rain and no wind, made great conditions for a fun photography adventure.

Lighting

Natural light is always my first choice and the festival conditions didn't let me down. Natural light was falling just right on the performers. The trick was to maneuver among other photographers to find just the right spot.

Equipment

I had just purchased a Canon R6 and was still going through an adjustment stage. 70-200 mm 2.8 lens. No flash. No tripod. I sometimes shudder when I leave the tripod behind, but there are times when a tripod is not advisable.,

Inspiration

Performers at the Chicago Blues Festivals are the most talented in their genre. Anne Harris is a wonder with her musical skills and performance. Her athleticism is obvious as she moves around the stage with joy and energy.

Editing

I use Lightroom for post-processing. Crop, contrast, and a bit of adjustments to darks and lights were used on this image.

In my camera bag

On this day, I had a minimum of equipment since we were walking to the festival. I had extra cards and batteries. That's it!

Feedback

To be in the photographers' pit for the Chicago Blues Festival, it was necessary to request a photographer's pass from Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. From there, they worked with me as to what was necessary to receive a pass. It was all worth it!
