Behind The Lens

Location

During our roadtrip we stayed in a beautiful apartment on the Lofoten. As these towns are all located between the moantains, they are never big. and therefore stunning views are everywhere. I had to step outside the apartment and just around the corner, this view presented itself. Truly amazing

Time

During our roadtrip on the Lofoten, we had a day with lots of rain and snow. The views were therefore not necessarily good during the day. But as it was May already, the sun never really sets and as I was laying in bed around 1am, I noticed the weather became calm. I opened the windows and saw the skies became clear so I got dressed and went outside. Glad I took the risk!

Lighting

As this was shot above the artic circle, the water gets a bit of "blue tint". This gives the perfect blueish tint in the picture. This picture was shot after midnights, but as the sun never really sets in May up north, light was still present.

Equipment

This was shot on my Nikon D3500 with the standard 18-55mm lens. I used a tripod as this is a long exposure.

Inspiration

My dream is to make a picture and print and frame it myself to hang in my house. Over the years, I have made some great shots but never felt like they were worth it to print. Therefore, my goal on my trip to the Lofoten was to make a picture worthy of having a place in my house. With this mindset, I took every opportunity to maybe take the shot of my life. After I walked around the corner through the snow at 1am in a small town called Hamnøy, I instantly knew this was it.

Editing

The reds in this picture were a bit dull, so I increased the luminance of the reds. Furthermore, I did some basic editing like raising the shadows as the mountains were pretty dark.

In my camera bag

I have a Nikon D3500 with two lenses, the standard Nikkor 18-55mm lens and a Nikkor 50-200mm telelens. Furthermore, I have a very basic tripod.

Feedback

When visiting the Lofoten, there are many tourist. However, they all spend the regular daytime to explore the perfect spots. As the sun isn't really setting, especially in summer, I recommend to go to the landmarks during the evening/early night. Then, no other people are around. Not only does this increase the pictures and make them look stunning with the low sun, I adds to the experience the tranquility of your surroundings.
