M83 (NGC5236), the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy, in the constellation of Hydra, lies some 14.74 million light years from Earth. A face on weakly barred spiral galaxy (type SAB(s)c), the galaxy subtends some 12.9 arcminutes in the sky, which at its distance give a true diameter of 55348.7 light years. The nearby dwarf irregular galaxy NGC5253 appears to have interacted with M83 in the last billion years, or so. This has generated a starburst in the central regions of both galaxies. Six supernovae have been observed in M83, the latest of which was SN1983N. M83 is the main galaxy of the M83 subgroup of the Centaurus A-M83 group of galaxies, one of the closest group of galaxies to our own Local group.
