Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my yard where I have a bed of moss. I had my head and camera at ground level.

Time

It was early morning just after the sun was peaking over the mountaintop. I often get my favorite shots this time of day. Thinking about what new sights I'll find gets me out of bed at dawn without hesitation.

Lighting

The sunlight was behind the moss illuminating the dewdrops and creating colorful sunbursts. This is one of my favorite natural effects. I always us a flash with macro to capture every detail.

Equipment

I used a Canon 6D with a Laowa 60mm Super Macro lens and a Meike Speedlite. I made a simple diffuser with paper and all of my macro shots are handheld.

Inspiration

There were new, tiny sprouts emerging from the moss with fresh dewdrops sparkling from the sunlight. My eye is immediately drawn to sights like this. I never quite know what I'll see until I look through the macro lens. There is always an element of discovery. I can spend several hours photographing one tiny area from different angles, especially when there are lots of different textures and the colors are rich.

Editing

I use Lightroom adjustments to finetune and draw out my favorite details.

In my camera bag

I carry very few things with me. My camera is always set up with the 60mm Super Macro lens, flash, diffuser and hand strap. The only other equipment I carry is my Laowa 25mm Ultra Macro lens to capture and pinpoint extreme detail. I use a small saddlebag type purse that perfectly holds the lens I'm not using. I like to switch back and forth with my two lenses with every subject I find. The composition possibilities are endless. I always have a small picnic blanket for when I need to l work at ground level like with this shot.

Feedback

A sharp macro shot requires complete stillness which is challenging, especially if there's a breeze or active insects, so I practice every day. On days I feel uninspired, I just start taking shots of whatever is in front of me and it helps get me into a grove. And on days when the colors feel dull, I set my camera to monochrome and work with light, shadow and texture.
