In the states, I kind of loathe grocery shopping. It feels sterile and disconnected. While grateful for the ease and sheer diversity in selection, it feels very robotic, and I can’t help but think where all the food comes from. We get in our box to drive to a box and then retreat back to our boxes to cook up our meals. Heck ...we often have our boxes delivered to our front doors. It's all about efficiency. Qualitatively, it's unfulfilling.
In Peru, I find the markets incredibly alluring. I can’t wait to go shop and often buy directly from the family responsible for growing the produce or raising and butchering the animal. The vibrancy of the market is intoxicating. Sometimes it’s a bit messy and chaotic, but it tickles the senses and fills not only your belly, but also your soul with vitality.
The food is connected to the culture and place. The open air steaming stalls of fresh meals being served up while you pull up on a cheap plastic seat is a wonderful experience. It’s part of the street theater and community. You get to know people. You’re forced to in some ways.
