Layered lava flows cooling from recent eruptions at Iceland's newest volcano--Geldingadalir. The volcano's cone looms in the background. Eruptions began March 19 when a fissure opened on the Reykjanes peninsula, just 20 miles from Reykjavík. A series of earthquakes (30,000+) in March 2021 created the fissure. A fountain of lava erupted on March 19, with frequent eruptions continuing through the year. The cooling lava flow here was still steaming after a spectacular eruption 3 days prior to this image. Our group watched the eruption for nearby Grindavik.
