Behind The Lens

Location

This is Belgrad Forest in north of Istanbul, Turkey. The forest is within proximity to both the Black Sea and the Bosphorus waterway. It is named after a nearby settlement that historically hosted Serbian immigrants during the Ottoman Empire. It is visited by the locals for recreation, running, and family picnics.

Time

This particular shot was taken around 4 PM in early March. The 2-3 hour window before the twilight provides best lighting in their area.

Lighting

It’s usually a challenge to get adequate sun in the denser sections of this forest however the trees near the lake receive good lighting from the setting sun in less cloudy days.

Equipment

iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Inspiration

Most trees in this forest date back to the 16th century. Today the majority of the area is a preserved park but historically it was a sacred forest for the local people because of its spring water sources that provided drinking water for many neighbor villages. The respect of the citizens for the nature over the centuries can still be sensed in the peace and tranquility of the park. The exposed roots of this tree, the unique earth color, and the fact that this enormous tree is still standing tall on a slope with half of its ground soil eroded was the main motivation and energy behind this shot.

Editing

Post processing includes warm color filter.

In my camera bag

FijiFilm XT4 with 18mm, 35mm, and 16-80mm. However, I was there for jogging and didn’t have my camera on me and I’m thankful that I was able to capture this with my cellphone camera. Sometimes whatever camera you have with you is the best camera you have!

Feedback

Occasionally several natural elements such as earth, sun, shadows, clouds, water, and trees come together in orchestration to create something really amazing. It is good to develop an eye to identify such moments and have the patience to try a few different angles.
