Behind The Lens

Location

This image was shot in my studio located in the historic Woolworth Bldg in downtown Medford, Oregon. The building was built in 1911. And served as the home of the Woolworth store until the early 1980s. This image was the 1st part of a series. Essentially a warm-up sequence before getting into producing a couple of different fantasy and fine art style shoots.

Time

Early afternoon. My studio space is located on the 4th floor of the Woolworth Bldg. I don't get much in the way of natural light through my windows due to the fact that there is a lot of large equipment that is part of the roof structure of the bldg. So I rely on other lighting.

Lighting

I use a combination of (2) 1x2 flexible LED light panels, and (2) 1x3 flexible LED light panels for most of my lighting. Which is what I used during the course of the shoot for this image. I will on occasion also make use of Photogenic Studio Max III lights for clamshell-style lighting.

Equipment

Canon EOS R camera body with Sigma 50mm f1.4 EF Art lens attached to a Canon EF to RF adapter. The lens was set at f5.6 and an ISO of 400. For most of my studio headshots and portraits, I have my camera attached to a Benro tripod which is mounted to a Tether Tools tripod roller, and Tether Tools crossbar. Most of my portrait work in my studio will make use of the Sigma 35mm f1.4 EF Art lens for full body portraits, the Sigma 50mm f1.4 EF Art lens for 3/4 style portraits, and the Sigma 85mm f1.4 EF Art lens for more close up style portraits. I make use of the Sigma 105mm f1.4 EF Art lens for all my headshot work.

Inspiration

The model Jen Ambrose is a friend of mine and a popular singer in my area. Jen has been a guest on different editions of my TV shows that I produced and hosted at RVTV in Ashland, Oregon. She has been a guest on my Friday comedy live show, The So NOT So Late Night Glamour Dave Show as a musical guest and a guest co-host. She was a guest on my show The Small Interview with Glamour Dave. And performed for both of my locally produced RVTV Christmas Specials for 2018 and 2019. Jen is always supportive of different creative endeavors of mine. And so she agreed to come into my studio for a pair of fantasy and fine art concepts. The produced images were submitted to the Portrait Masters photo competition. One of the submitted images earned a Bronze award at Portrait Masters.

Editing

I did some post-editing in a combination of Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop. And I use Nik Software's Silver Effx Pro for all my B&W editing.

Feedback

Establishing a good comfort level with the model helps. In my case, a good friendship was in play with this shoot. So that helped. Having a good plan of what is intended for the shooting is essential. The more intent you bring to a shoot the more success you will find. Allow flexibility in the time involved when the shoot is a personal concept project.
