Location
Well, usually to take pictures of aurora (AKA Northen light) you need to go to a very dark place with no light pollution. But by the time this happened, it was so strong and it happened so early that I neither had time to travel too far nor needed too, because it was strong. So basically I went to the closest dark place I knew just in the outskirts of the city I live, Uppsala, Sweden. By the way the city is not too far in the north, it is just 70 KM above Stockholm. And it is heavily light polluted. The good thing about this location is that it is in the north part of the city where I could point my camera towards north and away from the city, (therefore less light pollution) and to see the northern light you need to look towards north Or south in south hemisphere).Time
This was taken at the beginning of the night about 20:30. As I mentioned above, the display started very early, around the time I have finished my daily work and I rushed out with my camera to be at the location, at the pick of the event.Lighting
It was half moon and I had enough moonlight to compose my shot and get away with a clean image without rising ISO too much, in a same time it wasn't too bright that could obscure the aurora. Also, I was lucky that the moon was behind me.Equipment
This is captured on Fuji X-T4 camera with XF 16-55mm f2,8 R LM WR lens. The camera was mounted on a tripod. I also was using a remote shutter release.Inspiration
I always wanted to capture an aurora shot. for years I had no chance of even seeing it. A few months before this event, I had a chance for the first time to experience that magic but it was weak. After a few months we had a big strong northern light show that I missed, I was so disappointed, but not hopeless. As soon as I saw there will be another solar storm and a big chance of seeing an aurora, I was ready and made 2 attempts, the first one was not successful since the forecast was wrong, then the second night, the forecast was again wrong, a bit, but it has happened.Editing
I always process my raw files. In this case it is mainly correcting the white balance (it was shot with manual white balance), reducing clarity a tad, small adjustments to the colors (especially blues)In my camera bag
I am usually carrying my Fuji X-T4 with my 3 lenses; XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS, XF 16-55/2,8 R LM WR and XF 55-200mm F3.5-4.8 R LM OIS. My trusty induro AT013 tripod, Kase wolverine magnetic filters and a shutter releaseFeedback
I think the best take away from the story behind this picture is to be patient. You might not get the picture you want in first, second and third time you try, but you will eventually. But even more important is to have fun with your camera. Enjoy the process of the photography.
