These dolphins cruise up and down the coasts of the Hawaiian islands year round. Swimming with them is no doubt a magical experience, and one can easily get excited and loose their composure. I've noticed that people instinctually try to get close to these animals which can be dangerous, and biologist say that these human interactions are disrupting their rest & sleep, which is critical for them to be able to hunt in deeper water at other times of the day.
The federal government (NOAA) has banned swimming with wild dolphins in Hawaii because of this. My images were all taken before the ban was put in place. I'm a bit torn on this because the dolphins genuinely seem to enjoy the interactions with humans. But I do admit that things were getting a little crazy on the beach and in the water. It was starting to become a scene where 20-30 people would jump in the water and start chasing them around. If it were just a couple of people, I doubt a ban would be necessary, however when the crowds descend on a place, the situation changes and regulation in the name of protection is the next step.
This is just one of many examples of why I don't share locations of my images. I'm drawn to places off the beaten path and away from crowds. Often my favorite images, and favorite experiences with nature, happen when nobody else is around. I hope to preserve these natural places for as long as possible and may those who adventure to them, participate in being stewards of the land. mālama i ka 'āina. Solitude in nature is an experience worth seeking & preserving. Thank you coming to my TED talk ????
