Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Playa de Cabopino, Marbella, Spain during winter working vacation. I have been mostly shooting client sets and for print in smaller magazines, so going back to taking photo in the moment felt amazing. No moodboard, prep, or retouch (obviously!)

Time

It was about 10 am on a sunny day and sun was still quite low so it had created beautiful shadows

Lighting

I wanted my series to look like the child is never alone so you can see his imaginary friend in the shadow. I adore how kids can play on their own with no need to actually have a friend to run around with.

Equipment

This was shot on Sony A3 III with Sony 85mm f1.8 with no other equipment

Inspiration

There is this simplicity and humanity I feel when I take pictures of kids in their element. The world is beautiful through their eyes and every moment is so close to magic you never know what to expect. So I just turn my camera on and see through the lens those tiny bits and pieces of their imagination.

Editing

This photo required minimum post processing, just going back to B&W since I have taken a shot in B&W, worked with curves to create perfect contrast and that's basically it

In my camera bag

I normally pack Tamron 35mm f2.8 because of it's compact size and it works perfectly in sunny conditions. Sony 85mm f1.8 prime is probably my favorite to use - I just love how easy it is to separate object from surroundings with it. Dream is to 24-70mm f2.8 to my pack, I have taken it for a test drive and it's need to have for any photographer.

Feedback

I would suggest seeing if you can take pictures agains the sunlight to create profile and capture realistic size shadows. And the rest is just capturing a moment. If you are using mirrorless camera then using one shot drive mode is more than enough to capture your subject in action
