Behind The Lens

Location

When I got up in the morning, I could see it was foggy, so I immediately grabbed my camera and did a walk around the neighborhood to see what I could discover that might be interesting. The marina was only two doors down from where I lived.

Time

By the time I arrived at the marina in the early morning hours, the sun was getting high enough to start dissolving the misty conditions that created such a nice atmosphere for photography.

Lighting

I love the effect that fog or misty conditions has on natural light. It's interesting, mysterious, and blends together elements for a more unique capture. It's a natural filter!

Equipment

I used an OLYMPUS CORPORATION P&S digital camera. No flash or tripod but I may have stabilized the camera on a piling for the shot.

Inspiration

The early morning misty atmosphere is always an inviting condition for shooting, especially around water which was conveniently near by.

Editing

I normally always do post processing because I believe no photograph is complete straight from the camera. Something can always be improved. The power of the natural atmospheric conditions on this shot however did most of esthetics for me.

In my camera bag

I usually keep a polarizing filter on my DSLR lenses mainly for protecting the lens itself but this type of filter can also reduce glare and allow more image to reach the sensor. This however was a digital P&S camera and there was no filter used on the lens. Normally my priority is to have an extra battery available, one or two additional lenses that include wide-angle, and zoom. The middle pole on my tripod also pulls out to be used as a mono-pod. I often make use of that when I don't want to lug around a full tripod. Of course I keep some cleaning cloths handy, and for cold times of the year I keep a pair of cloth gloves that don't hinder my dexterity with handling the camera. I also keep a hat available in the car along with other items such as an extension pole, and insect repellent.

Feedback

Try your best to develop an "eye" for composition which is not only helpful during shooting but during post-processing. As you grow as a photographer, don't be afraid to look over your previous work after some time has passed. It will be a lot easier to find things you will want to improve on that will jump out at you, then when you find yourself back at that location, try shooting the same subject again. You will see improvement each time. Look at your subject from different perspectives and try and decide what might be an interesting point of view. Remember if you're using a digital camera, you aren't wasting film, so take advantage of that. If I take two captures of the same subject, one capture will be better than the other, with a difference usually being the focus/sharpness. You can experiment with DOF, Bokeh, and POV to name a few common elements. When time is an issue (in this case, the sun was quickly reducing the cool misty atmospheric element), the priority is to get the shots and tweak the adjustments in post.
