Behind The Lens

Location

In February, March 2019 I went to Antarctica. My travel started from Ushuaia and after two very difficult for me days we passed the Drake passage. Thus the first land I visited in Antarctica was Halfmoon island. It is small island situated close to the much bigger island Livingston.

Time

Time of the day is a bit abstract term in the high latitudes. The sun is shining very long time during the summer so we had a chance to see it more than 20-22 hours a day. During the whole travel our clocks showed the time in the time zone of the departing port - Ushuaia. Thus I step for the first time on the land around 20 o'clock.

Lighting

As I mentinoned before, the sum was shining very long time. Thus the lighting conditions were good for more than 20 hours a day. Of course it was depending alse of the weather conditions. Fortunately when I meet for the first time the habitants of the Antarctica the weather was marvelous. On such latitudes sun is very close to the horizon. Thus the sunrays were falling with very low angle to the ground. The shadows were long.

Equipment

During the travel I took with me Fuji X-T2, equiped with 70-300 telephoto lens. I did not use filter or tripod there.

Inspiration

Whe I saw the penguins for the first time I was naot able to believe where am I. This was my dream since the childhood. The penguins were on their rock looking to the sun. End of the Februaly and beginning of the March is the period of their molding. The winter is comming. And they did try to get as much as possible of the sunrays. The ice, the rocks, the ocean's water, the penguins. This is something that must be shared to the rest of the world.

Editing

At home, during the post processing I do some cropping for converting from 4:3 to 16:9, followed by applying some filter for decreasing the noice and increasing the sharpness. Because I'm shooting in RAW it is easy to do such processing.

In my camera bag

In addition to the main camera (Fuji X) always I care with me in some of the pockets or in a backap Ricoh GR II. This small 28mm camera allowed me not to change lenses where it was not possible - for example on Zodiacs. Of course I have with me wide lens for the Fuji X camera. Another useful equipment is action camera. Mine is Sony. It allowed me to make short clips at the same time while I was shooting with the main camera.

Feedback

If you want the capture similar photos just follow your dreams. And don't forget that the workld is only one. And we shoud care about it. Never bother the animals whenerever you are. Never leave anything different than your good memories on the places you visit. And never forget your equipment at home.
