Location
My husband and I were taking a trip out West and while travelling through north Texas we came across the Cadillac Ranch. This photo was taken outside Amarillo, Texas along I-40 (Route 66).Time
It was around lunchtime and it started raining really hard. I told my husband, "I sure hope it stops raining so we can stop at Cadillac Ranch. I really want to get some pictures." As you can see the rain stopped, but left a muddy mess in the field. I ruined my shoes but it was worth the pictures. This was taken on October 2, 2019 at 12:37pm.Lighting
The rain made for a nasty mess, but proved to be a blessing when taking this shot. The sky and clouds were awesome. So the light was nicely varied in contrast with the cars standing like Stonehenge in the middle of a Texan field. And as an added bonus, all the mud and standing water added even more light and dark texture to the landscape.Equipment
I used my Sony ILCE-6000 to take this photo (Aperture 10/1; ISO 500; Shutter 1/1600; and Focal length 160/10).Inspiration
When I take road trips I like to find unique spots along the way to photograph. Cadillac Ranch is a very unique sight to see. People stop along the way and spray paint or write their name on one of the cars as a memento of their travel along Route 66. I hoped to get some shots that would make the viewer think of Stonehenge. Or in this case--"Carhenge".Editing
With so much variation in light and texture, I decided to opt for black and white. I started with the HDR filter on Snapseed. Then used LightRoom to convert the picture to black and white. I increased the contrast, texture and clarity slightly. In my camera bag
I rarely go anywhere without my Sony ILCE-6000. I also recently became the owner of a second camera--a Canon EOS 2000D. And like most us, I rarely leave home without my Samsung phone, which I've upgraded simply for it's outstanding camera.Feedback
I may have ruined my shoes and got really muddy while taking this photo but it was an adventure. That's what I love about photography--the adventure in trying to get that one great shot! So take a risk. It doesn't have to be a death defying risk. Shoes can be replaced and mud can be washed away but shots like this can be priceless.
