Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Soo Locks. The ship, Stewart J. Cort, is the first 1000 footer to pass through the Soo Locks. Just by chance I got to photograph this famous ship during a random visit to the Soo Locks!

Time

Shot this mid afternoon on an overcast rainy day. This soft low light kept the risk of blown out highlights manageable and the allowed the shadows to be full of detail.

Lighting

When shooting I try and not just "document" but rather enjoy chasing after an artful feel. I'm still tinkering with this a bit in Photoshop... LOL, I got excited with a quick post to VB because I like this one so much... The image felt a bit too busy if I increased the contrast and lightened. It is dark but I don't mind a little mystery in a shot. Perhaps when looking at it you can feel the need to pull in a little closer.

Equipment

Nikon's D7100 is showing signs of wear but it has been a great friend with Nikon's 200m-500m VR zoom. (the D810 currently does my wide angle shooting)... so most times I try to have both cameras with me. A 1000 foot ship doesn't fit in a telephoto up close but I was excited to grab some closeup detail of this freighter.

Inspiration

I have a series of photos taken down through the years with diagonal stairways shot so they are vertical or horizontal. I will never get tired of shooting anything and everything... I think it's a sickness LOL. Inspiration of lines, angles, color, mystery, and texture can pull me in every time I see these.

Editing

With no agenda set and no idea of the final look, I use photoshop and wander through options and possibilities. This usually takes way longer than a professional photo editor would take but I find it relaxing and quite enjoyable.

In my camera bag

In my bag I have some hard drives, extra cards, filters, 70m-200m 2.8 VR, D810 with 16m-35m 4.0 VR, D7100 with 200m-500m 5.6 VR, 50m 1.4 and last (and probably least) the seldom used tripod.

Feedback

Many options in PhotoShop are a dead end for me but each dead end is a learning opportunity. My goal is creating photo art most times. Composition of thirds with a tight color pallet works for my taste most times. Chase after emotion and excitement that can carry creativity with each shot. Shooting foreground background and subject horizontally and vertically and yes, sometimes diagonally can be quite fun. Slow down and give much thought to what your goals are in each manual shot. Cheers to the VB Family in giving me any advise as well!!!
