My goal was to have a fresh look at this 1958 landmark. Every rivet. Wide angle helps too!

Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken on the Mackinac Bridge. Driving about 25 miles per hour, I put my camera through the sun roof of my Jeep and shot multiple shots vertically. I try and move the camera various angles and hope that a shot will turn out because I'm not looking through the camera but driving the car.

Time

This was late morning and this shot happened on a cloudy and rather gloomy day.

Lighting

My personal taste is to try and avoid harsh light and avoid strong shadows for the initial image capture. I try and underexpose on purpose because of my printing background and fear of blown out highlights. RAW can typically bring back as much detail in the shadows as you need and add highlights without blowing the details out. In the spirit of being artful over a strict documenter I needed to post process this in a direction I personally found interesting and artful.

Equipment

Nikon D810 with a Nikon 16-35mm wide-angle set at F9, 16mm, 1250 ISO 1/500 helped pick up the braided cable and rivets on this amazing bridge. I try and not shoot over 1250 ISO because of noise and try and not shoot slower than 500 if moving objects.

Inspiration

When shooting a landmark like this bridge I like to visit Google images and ask myself how can I stand out from the "zillions" of other images. What is a fresh look on a common subject. With this image I feel the 16mm helped and also the bizarre edit in Photoshop that I did.

Editing

When talking about editing I usually have a silly grin on my face. I don't know Photoshop as much as I need to even though I've attended workshops and have used it with graphic designers for many years. I don't mind experimenting with various effects and just going back a few steps if I don't like where the edit is going. This edit was done with a single layer. I like the sky because it reminds me of northern lights and I really like the bridge with all the rivets in high resolution. I would rather experiment in Photoshop for entertainment than watch football... Editing is pure entertainment to me.

In my camera bag

Nikon D810 with a wide-angle zoom, Nikon D7100 with a Nikon 200-500mm telephoto, Nikon 50mm fast lens, Nikon 70-200mm 2.8, Nikon flash, closeup lens kit, extra batteries and cards, and that's about it.

Feedback

Safety first. Perhaps have someone else do the driving. Always try and take more frames than what you think you need especially when rolling down the road with the composition of the shot changing so frequently. Also who knows where the auto focus will land when you aren't actually looking through the camera. Try and be mindful of keeping the camera straight so you don't have to crop so much later. Ask yourself verticle or horizontal... Laugh about the dead end edits and enjoy the path of learning new things. I'm semi-retired now so I can brag a bit about having the luxury of extra time instead of the heavy deadlines I fought with my entire life. Thank you View Bug Community for your ability to inspire me and even push me to raise that bar towards world class excellence. Enjoy the journey friends.
