Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken from Knox Butte in the central Willamette Valley of Oregon. It looks west to the Oregon Coast Range. It looks across rye grass fields just before harvest.

Time

It was taken in the evening at Sun Set. I drive up there often in the evening to watch and photograph the sunset. The only place to stop and set up at the Pioneer Graveyard.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the sunlight as the sun touches the mountain tops. at this moment. the sunlight is at such an angle that is light up the entire sky. It is also a moment where the light softens and it loses an harsh shadows.

Equipment

I shot this with my Nikon D5000. My Nikkor landscape lens. and my Tripod. I used my cable release to avoid shaking.

Inspiration

The sunsets in the fall in the Willamette Valley can be spectacular with with an amazing range of color. However when the grass seed harvesting begin the dust raised by farm equipment tends to reflect the yellow to orange colors. The sunsets lose the harsh shadows, have a narrower range of colors and appear softer. I love the mystical lighting of the landscape.

Editing

I use the camera raw filter on Photoshop to make adjustment where necessary. I recently have been using the Neural filters style transfers. It allows me to bring another level of creativity to my images that I could not achieve otherwise.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon Dx5000. a 35 mm lens, a 200 mm lens and my landscape lens. I carry a range of filters for each lens: polarizer. 4 neutral density filters, a UV filter and a macro filter. I have a cable release (I have manual release and remote.) Two chargers, a sturdy tripod, a water proof field notebook and tons of lens cleaning supplies.

Feedback

Patience is the most important skill for a photographer, I arrive 1-2 hours before sunset, I have my location selected. I set up my equipment and check to see that every thing works, and frame my shot. At that point I wait for the sunset to develop. I am frequently disappointed to see that the sunset does not develop or is not worth shooting. The good opportunities for a sunset are far out weighed by the disappointing sunsets.
