Location
I was meandering towards Vancouver City’s West End via Granville Street Bridge after going on a spontaneous walk explore the area. I had just started crossing over the False Creek Yacht Club Marina when the potential for a landscape shot became too gorgeous to resist!Time
Twilight of September 22, 2021 at exactly 7:44 PM. It was during that sweet spot between daylight bustle and vibrant nightlife - an eye of the city’s constant storm, figuratively and literally.Lighting
The sun had only just set over the horizon - so twilight was in it’s newly born stage of brightly illuminated deep blues. The city’s lights were switched on en-mass in anticipation of nightfall almost immediately after. The competing, equally bright artificial and natural lights - in contrasting colours no less! - created an enthralling dynamic that highlighted the West End beautifully!Equipment
An iPhone 11 camera is all I have access to at the moment, so nothing overly complicated! It’s a huge goal of mine to buy a professional camera so I can push my photography (and myself) even further - and I hope to fulfil that dream soon!Inspiration
It’s a toss-up between the contrasting colours and the framing of the scene itself. I’d noticed how well that spot on the bridge lined up all the scene’s elements earlier in my walk, and it hit me how well complimented by the lights they’d be as soon as got switched on. Ended up full-out sprinting back over to catch it, ha!Editing
1) Duplicated the image and cut everything out but the city and the waterfront (including boats) with Pixomatic Pro. 2) Increased the gamma by 10%, the exposure, highlights, + shadows by 5%, and slightly distorted the left-side buildings to increase their size. 3) Merged the two layers back together, with the altered layer (see: 2) on top. 4) Colour corrected the orange hues to better contrast with the blues. 5) Decreased the red midtones by 5%. 6) Ran the image through Remini (AI Photo Enhancer) to improve it’s clarity. 7) Duplicated the result and filled it in white to create a border. I then enlarged it to frame the final image. In my camera bag
A single cracked iPhone 11 and stubbornness issues, ha!Feedback
Take advantage of photo opportunities when they present themselves - not having access to the equipment you’d prefer to use for a shot shouldn’t prevent you from trying! I missed out on a lot of opportunities to take great photos because I didn’t think my camera would work well for them. I almost didn’t take this shot at all! Take your chances and figure out what you can do with them later, because the results can be more amazing then you think!
