Behind The Lens

Location

I took the photo on a birding trip at Maize Island Lagoon, Waikerie, South Australia.

Time

I'd woken early, just after dawn to take advantage of the morning photography opportunity particularly as I was camping in a quiet area alongside a river opposite beautiful cliffs. I'd been shooting for awhile and was walking back mid-morning when I came across a tree with a lot of noise and activity. It was 2 pairs of very busy Rosellas. Took a lot of shots to finally get some without branches cluttering the photo.

Lighting

Being late morning, the "nice" lighting was over. It was actually a very bright sky by then with the sun near overhead. Didn't have too much time to think but the settings of earlier shots provided a good result.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon EOS 70D, Canon EF 100-400 L IS, handheld.

Inspiration

I try to take photos where there isn't much clutter around the bird, but these Rosellas whilst among the branches of the tree were putting on such a great show it was worth an attempt to get a great shot. The opportunity came after some patience and a few 10 shot bursts.

Editing

I don't usually do a lot of post-processing and at the moment am using some free photo editing software. I generally go through a process of cropping, work on the highlights and shadows, do lens correction, adjust levels and curves, brightness and contrast, saturation, unmask sharp and vignette.

In my camera bag

I carry all of my photography equipment with me when I do my photography trips so I can have the opportunity for birding, landscape, street and people photography. Of course when I go birding (my favourite photography) I use my Canon EOS 70D, the 100-400 lens, and a tripod. I take the Canon 40D spare body, always have several fully charged batteries and a spare memory card. Of course, a bottle of water, sunscreen, insect repellent and some snacks.

Feedback

The environment around lakes and rivers give you great opportunities for birding. Here in South Australia we have wonderful weather conditions in spring and autumn with great Golden Hours, perfect for bird photography. We have the benefit of a small population and have access to many wonderful conservation parks, to go free camping and grab the opportunity to have a wonderful photography experience.
