My son owns a CrossFit gym in Norway and was very strong. There is a slightly rude, old English description which goes "He's built like a brick s**t house". Hence the bricks. On top of that, just after they first met my son and his now wife were meeting on the beach in Cambodia for a drink and somebody grabbed her bag and ran off with it. My son chased them down and got her bag back and as they say the rest is history so there is the additional inspiration that he will always be there to protect her.

Behind The Lens

Location

The original photo was taken in my studio at home.

Time

Mid afternoon, I think but using studio lighting that makes this irrelevant.

Lighting

3 strobes providing back/side light and a weaker one illuminating the faces.

Equipment

Canon 5D Sr Canon EF 85mm f1.2 3 x Godox strobes

Inspiration

My son owns a CrossFit gym in Norway and was very strong. There is a slightly rude, old English description which goes "He's built like a brick s**t house". Hence the bricks. On top of that, just after they first met my son and his now wife were meeting on the beach in Cambodia for a drink and somebody grabbed her bag and ran off with it. My son chased them down and got her bag back and as they say the rest is history so there is the additional inspiration that he will always be there to protect her.

Editing

Just a bit :) . Added the wall which was taken in Yorkshire (some 300 miles away). Had to make the wall section bigger with extra layers. Then something like different 25 samples of bricks were layered into different sections of my son's body. Each layer had to be sized, bent and twisted to fit and shaded to look more realistic. The whole process took around 12-15 hours intiially and then there was a 3-4 hour revisit to improve things.

In my camera bag

Usually 2 cameras Canon 5D SR and 5D mk4. Lenses depending on what kind of shoot I'm doing. For wildlife I have 2 400mm Canon lenses (f2.8 and F4 DO) portraits, 50mm f1.2 and 85mm f1.2. Usually use a 24-105 zoom as my go to flexibility whilst using a suitable prime on the other camera.

Feedback

Make the assumption that anything in photography is possible until you prove it otherwise. Just break down how to achieve the image you want and start putting things in place. You may need to change plans but photography is a load of fun based around problem solving.
