The Winston Nanan Caroni Bird Sanctuary is one of the main bird sanctuaries in Trinidad & Tobago... It is the place to go to see the Scarlet Ibis come in to roost. The area is a very large swamp and visitors are taken around in these wide flat bottomed boats by the Nanan family and other tour guides. Sadly the birds are illegally hunted for their meat and their numbers are rapidly dwindling. In spite of this it is an amazing sight to see the birds come in their numbers to roost in the mangroves in the evening. There are also flocks of flamingos to be admired! The Caroni Bird Sanctuary is one of the most famous bird sanctuaries in Trinidad & Tobago.
