Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Gulf of Paria to the west of Trinidad where dinghy and cruiser races take place during the sailing racing season - October to March, when the winds are at their best for sailing. As the Sailing School Administrator I planned and organized all activities concerning the School, in particular dinghy racing. There were two fast safety boats in addition to the Committee Boat for each race day. I would always be in one of the safety boats driving around monitoring the activities of the sailors during and in between each race.

Time

Weekly dinghy races during racing season took place on Saturdays and began at about 1 p.m. Races would finish just before sunset so the racers, most of whom were young persons, could return to the Sailing Association boatyard before it became too dark. In this photo, Flying Trapeze - the dinghy is an "MR 15" sailed by its adult owners. Shortly after I took this photo they capsized! There's a photo of them about to right capsized dinghy on my Viewbug page!

Lighting

That day we began racing in beautiful sunshine. Then the weather changed on us which is common during our rainy season. The sea also became quite rough. This photo would have been taken about 3 in the afternoon with a storm suddenly coming in!

Equipment

I wish I could say I have all kinds of wonderful equipment but this would have been impossible in a very fast open speed boat, in rough seas. All I ever used was my trusty little Fujifilm Finepix A340 camera! This shot: F-stop f/9.5 Exposure 1/210 ISO 64 Exposure bias 0 step Focal length 17mm Max aperture 3 White Balance Auto Sharpness Normal Brightness 8.65 No flash

Inspiration

I love event planning and I particularly love dinghy racing! My photography shows the racing history of the Sailing School, its sailors and its members during my tenure as Administrator and has given me a lifetime of great memories! I love the sea and living on an island I do not have to drive too far in any direction before I reach the sea!!! I love photographing the sea!

Editing

For the most part cropping and minor adjustments, straightening of horizon etc!

In my camera bag

My camera, a Canon PowerShot SX40 HS, spare batteries, SD Card and now my tripod! Nothing fancy!

Feedback

Once you have the opportunity, just enjoy what you're photographing and have fun! I did!
