The Golden Gate Bridge spans the fabled Golden Gate from the Marin Headlands in the north, southward to San Francisco.
This natural opening was named for moderately obvious reasons: gold.
Approximately 23k people came overland to California's gold fields while another 62K came via ship through the Golden Gate in San Francisco Bay. 40k of those people came in the first 8 months of 1849 (hence the "'49ers") alone.
