Location
This photo was taken at Wehr Nature Center in Franklin, WI.Time
After weeks of being couped up by our computers (I work as a video editor and my wife works as a production coordinator) my wife and I decided to take a midday hike at one of our favorite local spots. Seeing as how it's migratory season in the state I had to bring my lens. Usually, we do a loop around the nature center's lagoon, but we decided to venture off into the woods for the first time and about 15 minutes later we ran into a group of Wild Turkeys.Lighting
I love the lighting in this shot. Truth be told, I don't usually shoot midday and I don't usually shoot woodland birds, but I'll definitely do it again after looking through the photos of this day's shoot. The way sunlight filters through the woods is pure magic and mood, and with this shot the light captured the Wild Turkey's multicolor feathers just right.Equipment
Like most of my wildlife captures I shot this on a Sony A7RIV w/ Sony 200-600mm G lens. It's a winning combo for me.Inspiration
This shot was literally taken in the lead-up to Thanksgiving. When I saw the turkeys I immediately knew when and why I'd be posting this photo.Editing
There's not a lot of post-processing done in this picture. Just a little bit of vibrancy and mood added in lightroom, but I've always liked to keep things natural. I'm new to photography, and while I've messed around a bit with lightroom (every new student has to go ham at some point, right?) I haven't found a distinct artistic style yet for myself. Until then I'm going to keep things natural because there's a purity to it that I like.In my camera bag
Sony A7RIV, Sony 200-600mm G and Sigma art primes. I tend to stick with the telephoto for wildlife and I really enjoy Sony's lens offerings, but those Sigma art lenses are an underrated steal of a price.Feedback
Walk slowly. I've tried to capture Wild Turkeys in the past and they can be extremely skittish. Luckily, these ones were busy foraging and definitely use to people. Wildlife is 80% patience, 15% camera settings and 5% luck. Well, sometimes I think the luck is a higher percentage than anything else, but patience is an underrated skill in both wildlife photography and life.
